Shining a Light on Sustainability: Earth Hour
22 April 2025 – a dynamic hub in Southeast Asia, joins a global movement each year as lights dim in observance of Earth Hour. This symbolic event, now a worldwide phenomenon, traces its origins back to Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF),
the inaugural Earth Hour saw 2.2 million individuals in Sydney switch off their lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change.
The impact was profound, resonating far beyond the shores of Australia. This year, the global commitment to Earth Hour reached new heights, with
Earth Hour 2025 doubling the previous record as nearly 3 million hours were given for the planet, demonstrating an intensified global focus on environmental action.
In continuation of this meaningful tradition, Equatorial Plaza actively participated in Earth Hour this year. As a symbolic yet powerful gesture underscoring the importance of energy conservation, all façade lights, building signages, driveway lights, and half of the interior lighting were switched off from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM across the complex. This visual gesture underscores its solidarity with the global community in raising awareness about environmental conservation and the urgent need to address climate change.
However, Equatorial Plaza’s commitment to sustainability is deeply ingrained in its daily operations and long-term strategy. The development, which proudly holds the GBI Gold green building certification, integrates sustainable practices at every level. This includes the implementation of energy-efficient lighting and climate control systems throughout the complex, significantly reducing its carbon footprint by
an estimated 6.5 million KgCO2e per year. Water conservation measures are also a priority, ensuring responsible usage of this precious resource.
By actively participating in Earth Hour and diligently implementing comprehensive sustainability practices, Equatorial Plaza strives to be a beacon of environmental responsibility in the city. The development believes that collective action, both symbolic and practical, is crucial in creating a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
